In spite of the Income Tax Department’s warning last October, tax payers continue to receive fraudulent e-mails promising income tax refunds, but with changed wordings. They appear to be using servers in the United States and the United Kingdom (UK) and UK domains. India has a tax-paying population of 31.5 million and the popularity of online filing has increased again this year. No wonder then, they have entered the radar of cyber criminals. The Income Tax department is alerting taxpayers about Internet frauds in which fraudulent e-mails are sent promising a refund of taxes. So be cautious, if you receive any such e-mail, as it could just be a phishing attempt to get your credit card details.
Information has been received from several quarters that people are receiving electronic mails informing them of their income-tax refunds and seeking their credit card details. The email is sent from the following or similar mailing addresses
<lhxbkw@accounts.net>
or
<cvhfvs@accounts.net>
It is clarified that the Income Tax Department does not send e-mails regarding refunds and does not seek any information regarding credit cards of taxpayers. Such e-mails prompts user to furnish personal and financial information, such as bank account or credit card numbers. The practice of tricking victims into revealing private personal and financial information over the Internet is known as “phishing” for information. The information fraudulently obtained by scammers is used to steal the taxpayer’s identity and then his or her financial assets.
